Annual Prom Dress Giveaway — Please Help…

2007 will mark our fifth year the YWCA and the Jr. League combine their efforts to hold the annual prom dress giveaway. Together we collect new and almost-new formal dresses and accessories to give to high school students who might be unable to purchase prom attire. Some families are faced with difficult financial decisions when their daughters want to attend proms and school special events. Prom dresses and accessories can be expensive and girls from economically disadvantaged families may be unable to attend their proms because they cannot afford suitable attire.

Each spring high school girls are invited to My Sister’s Closet on special days to shop at the prom dress “boutique”. The boutique creates the fun and exciting atmosphere of shopping for the perfect prom outfit, complete with personalized shopping assistance from volunteers. We have made the dreams of many young ladies come true by providing donated prom dresses and accessories to attend their special event.

We need your help in collecting and donating prom dresses, eveningwear, bras, and accessories for these young ladies. In 2006, 114 young ladies from 19 area schools received dresses. More would have received them, but we did not have many plus size dresses. These young ladies unfortunately were left out.

Dresses and accessories can be shipped or brought to the YWCA Central AL, attn: Brenda McNeil at 309 North 23rd Street, Birmingham, AL 35203. If you have questions, I can be reached at (205) 322-9922 ext. 172 or (205) 706-0354 (cell) and will be more than glad to answer them. This year’s prom dress giveaway is scheduled for Saturday, March 3rd and 10th. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you. All donations are tax deductible.
