The unforgettable Whitney Thompson, plus-sized winner ofAmerica’s Next Top Model Cycle 10, is launching an ambitious new project: president and founder of an online dating site for plus-sized women calledThe Big and the Beautiful.

As the only plus-sized model to ever winAmerica’s Next Top Model, Whitney is the perfect spokesmodel for the average, healthy American woman looking for love. As she says in her press release, “Anyone who has looked for love online, like me, is familiar with the cycle: post ‘flattering’ photos to get attention, then stress about the face-to-face meeting… I created this site so people don’t have to stress over their profile, but can focus on the fun and excitement of meeting and dating other incredible people of all shapes and sizes.”

The auspicious concept will likely attract tons of girls, and, as Whitney puts it, “[a curvy woman] can show her confidence and know that the men are here for — not in spite of — her physical attributes.”

Compared to the typical ANTM winner’s post-show activities (furniture catalogs, yawn), we’re actually excited to see one of Tyra’s young students graduate into a very Tyra-esque career.

I am curious as to what constitutes “plus size” in the minds of most Americans. When I was a very young woman, curves were very much “in” – considered very female and very sexy. The pinups of that pre-Twiggy era are often considered “over-sized” by today’s standards. I really wonder just how healthy that attitude is both medically and psychologically. Nature curves the female body for more reasons than to attract the male. I remember Precious Ramotswe’s references to being “of traditional build” in Alexander McCall Smith’s “The Number 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” series of novels (and the HBO episodes based on them). Her attitude seems healthy to me.

As for the dating site concept: open to the senior generation – the one that grew up with curvy ladies?
