HydroChic – Review of Plus Size Activewear for Swim and Sport

I am an active plus size woman (size 20W) and help run PLUS Model Magazine. I absolutely adore many different water based activities including paddle boarding,  hi-intensity aqua, playing on the beach even on a cool day, and I love a day at the water park with the kids. I am not shy about myself in the least however, because I am very active the last thing I want to worry about is what I can comfortably wear in and out of the water.

I was introduced to HydroChic’s plus size line nearly a year ago. Recently, HydroChic offered me an opportunity to give their product a try when they learned about my love of the water. I was most interested in their Ultra Chlorine Resistant line. Since I participate in hi-intensity aqua workouts at the gym, the super chlorinated water has reduced many swimsuits to near threads. I found that I was constantly worried about a wardrobe malfunction when propelling myself out of the water over and over again during cross country skiing type moves. As a former surfer many moons ago, I missed the convince of a wetsuit for sport but not the restrictive nature of the material. I will admit that the idea of material being labeled Ultra Chlorine Resistant challenged me to really put the product through some intense testing.

I have worn the Chlorine Resistant Skort and Chlorine Resistant Long Sleeve Shirt (comes with a swim sports bra) 22 times in the pool at my gym. Let me start by saying, I am one of those women who swore I would never wear a skort in the water, or at all! My opinion has changed and now I can’t get enough! The first couple of times I wore the outfit in the water, it took some getting used to wearing “clothes” but I did quickly notice that it kept my body warm in a similar fashion  to a wetsuit. It also took some time getting used to the skort during my aqua workouts (I would suggest the Chlorine Resistant Short) as it feels more comfortable to have something that fits the body more snugly. Now, I can’t imagine doing my workouts in the pool in anything else. No tugging, pulling, adjusting, or concerns. It actually improved the level of my workouts as my body stayed warmer in the pool. To test the durablity even further, I let the chlorine sit in the fabric for days at a time on multiple occasions. There is no fading, the stitching is perfectly intact, the shape always stays the same without becoming stretched out, and the colors are as vibrant as the day I received them. The photos of me in the outfit was taken on 3/7/12 and still looks, feels, and wears like a brand new outfit. The fit of the activewear is spot on and the skort is the perfect length (not too long and not too short).

HydroChic offers the plus size women additional flexibility as you can easily move from water to land based activities. From lunch on the deck of a cruise ship, to an excursion in an exotic local, HydroChic easily moves with you.

WHOA! Nice activewear/swim suits! After looking at the possibilities, I had a difficult decision. I’d first get the Plus Size Tank & match it w/ a Plus Size Skort Ultra & wear it at the beach! They’re modest enough that after you’ve rinsed off & dried a bit, you could go shopping afterwards!

  2. You are right! It dries very quickly and you can easily do a little shopping afterwards. I have paired the skort with a tank and on a chilly day I have worn it with an athletic fitted jacket. It is very versatile!

I loved the Plus Size Swim Skirt – Ruched Swim Skirt. I could go to a tourist filled beach and feel stylish while comfortable enough to go for a dip. Love it!!!

  4. The ruched swim skirt is super cute! I haven’t tried it but I almost chose that skirt instead of the skort. However, it was important to me to have something that was Ultra Chlorine Resistant so I went with the skort. If you get the Ruched Swim Skirt, let me know what you think!

I like the idea of the Plus Size Bike & Swim Shorts – Ultra. I’d like something durable that I could use for more than one activity. With the spring coming I could see using these for walks and hikes. I’d use these for hiking around Tiger mountain.
