Mad Men Actress Christina Hendricks Interview – Kate Waterhouse Sets Full Figure Record Straight and I Weigh In…
I recently had the opportunity to be interviewed by Kate Waterhouse, the reporter who interviewed Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks, and shared my disappointment with Hendricks’s reaction to being called ‘Full Figured.”
Below is the start of Kate’s article in response…
Kate Waterhouse Writes:
Last week I dropped the F-bomb and it went global. No, I didn’t swear – the international media storm was because I called the Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks ”full-figured”.
I asked: ”You have been an inspiration as a full-figured woman; what is the most inspiring story that you can remember?” It seemed inoffensive to me, so I was shocked when she refused to answer the question and told me it was ”just rude”.
Upon my words … who’d have thought Christina Hendricks’s reaction to Kate Waterhouse’s question would go viral. I was not intending to be rude. In fact, I think she is one of the sexiest women on the planet.
What are your thoughts on the word full figure as well as Kate’s use of the word and Christina’s reaction? Share your thoughts below…

Good for her. It’s a stupidly phrased, patronizing question that had no place in the interview in the first place. She’s an actress, not a motivational figure and I see no reason why she or any other actress should have to respond to idiotic, condescending questions about their bodies. Frankly, the interviewer seemed rather slow-witted.

I think each woman has her own insecurities, and different words have different connotations for different people. Full-figured may have a negative emotion and memory for Hendricks, it’s not for us to judge whether or not that she’s sensitive to that term. I honestly do not like being called full-figured or plus-size because THESE ARE LABELS society has created to put BOUNDARIES ON WOMEN based on their shape. Which in all honesty, is not as progressive as our society ought to be by now. And just the same, I do not like the terms supermodel or “normal” to describe a thin person either. These are more labels put on thin and at times unhealthily skinny people, but bring about acceptance for them anyway. Why should anyone be allowed to put describe a person by their shape? Why is that not rude? Christina Hendricks is a beautiful role-model for women who don’t fit society’s misconstrued idea of normal.
Hendrick’s also handled herself beautifully. She wasn’t rude, she wasn’t short and she didn’t end the interview; she allowed it to continue. The interviewer, Ms. Kate Waterhouse, was unprofessional and I can only assume was told before the interview, that this term was off limits or even after the first time she said it was told why it made Hendricks uncomfortable. Waterhouse is at fault, and poor Hendrick’s need to be left alone.

Well, if she does not want to be called “full-figured” then that request should be respected. “Plus size”, “fat”, “chubby” … that may be her perception of the word. I know personally I don’t want someone ELSE calling me any of those descriptions. I can! But not anybody else. We need to remember all of these terms have evolved from “fat”. So it may sting to some. Others may not care. However, she has the right to like or dislike a term that has been thrown on her.
