She has been publicly talking about creating a clothing line since last year and has finally gotten the green light to start it. Kelly told attendees at Hollywood’s BeautyCon L.A. Summit last month that she had a productive meeting, which sealed the deal. She was told she can have total creative control, which means she will get to include plus sizes, something she has wanted to do from the beginning.
Kelly already knows that her clothing line will reflect her personality but while she wants some quirkiness to the line, she recognizes that her style is not for everyone. So she is really going to take that into consideration when choosing styles for the masses. Her goal is to design fashion that could be worn at all sizes.
“It still has to be very me — quirky,” she explained, while acknowledging her offbeat style isn’t for everyone. “[But] that’s me, so I have to [also] have something slightly normal.”
“You know I was having fun but no one takes notice of a fat girl in fashion. That’s the truth! It’s sad. That’s why I love women like Beth Ditto who are doing their own clothes. That’s why when my line comes out I’ll never make anything that won’t be translated to plus-size as well. Because everyone deserves to wear fashion.”
Having had her own struggles with weight, Kelly admits that she realized early on that the fashion world didn’t embrace larger bodies and when she lost weight, it gave her a new perception of the fashion world and made her realize the need for plus size fashion. She told US Weekly:
“I’ve always been really into fashion. It’s just that my fashion choices at an early age were really odd and they still are. I have grown to understand, as much as I don’t like it, that the fashion world doesn’t really want to listen to what a little chubby girl has to say. When I lost weight and started to wear the clothes I always wanted to wear but didn’t fit into, that’s when [my perception within the industry] really started to change. It did give me a bit of a bittersweet feeling towards the fashion world.”
We’re so excited to hear this news. Another win-win for plus size fashion! I, for one, am curious to see what she comes out with. I personally loved Beth Ditto’s collection at Evans so if it’s anything like that, watch out Fashion World!
