For plus size women, shopping for a Halloween costume has not always been easy.  But over the years, more options have emerged and shopping has gotten easier.

Before you start shopping for that perfect Halloween costume, here’s some tips to keep in mind:

– Many costumes run small so beware. Always know your measurements and look at size charts carefully.

– Familarize yourself with different costume brands out there such as Leg Avenue, Dreamgirls, Charades, and others, and do your research on how their sizing runs. Google is your friend on this one. Check out blogs, reviews, etc. One blog that I found very helpful when writing this article was AffatshionistaHer blog post focused mainly on costumes that are a size 4X and above, which I think is great, as many plus size women above a size 3X often feel ignored and frustrated at the lack of options available in their size. You can check out Affatshionista‘s post by clicking here.

– Don’t be afraid to check websites like eBay and Etsy if you have no luck at the usual retailers. You never know what gem you can find.

– Referencing Affatshionista‘s blog again, she talks about DIY costumes, which I think is another fabulous idea. There are plenty of DIY sites out there and if you have the time and are feeling inspired, I say GO FOR IT.

– Check out thrift stores. They’re great places to find unique things and you may end up with a better costume than one that you would buy from a retailer.

With that said, there’s still time to find that perfect costume in your size – here’s a list of retailers online who offer plus size costumes:

Sonsi – Their costume shop offers costumes in sizes 1X-4X as well as accessories, hosiery and those little extras you will need to make your costume perfect.

Forever Yours Lingerie – This Canadian company offers costumes in sizes up to a 4X as well as accessories and hosiery.

Torrid – Offers costumes up to a 3/4, as well as t-shirts, shoes, accessories and hosiery.

Woman Within – Offers costumes up to a size 4X but please be aware that sizing runs differently on some costumes. Some are sized 14 and up, some are sized by one size called PLUS and others are 1X – 4X. Make sure you check out size charts before purchasing.

Party City – I was surprised to learn that Party City offers costumes up to a size 4X. They also have their costumes categorized in such a great, easy way. They even carry Men’s plus size costumes for that big and tall man in your life.

Spirit Halloween– this company has sizing similar to Woman Within. Some costumes go up to a size 4X and some are sized by one size called PLUS. According to their size chart, PLUS means a size 14-16.

One Stop Plus – Offers costumes up to a size 4X and they have a huge assortment of costumes. They also offer accessories (including makeup), hosiery and shoes.

Walmart – Offers some affordable options in Halloween costumes. However, they only offer up to a size 20W.

Last tip: Don’t wait until the last minute! Most retailers need at least 2 weeks to process and ship your costume; unless you want to pay for express shipping, which may be costly. So have fun, rock your costume and enjoy Halloween!
