Beauty Spotlight: Orange Lipstick Is The New Red For Spring 2014

This spring, the hottest lipstick trend is orange. Yes, you read right, orange.

Orange is a bold color but this newest trend is easily one that many woman can wear since many of the new orange lipsticks for Spring are matte (another spring beauty trend) AND orange is a color that can be mixed with red and take on a shade that looks fabulous.

Mixing lip color is a great way to create a shade that suits your skin tone. On the Spring 2014 runways, many designers were doing this with beautiful results. DKNY’s makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury mixed two shades of Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Lip ColorElectric Orange and Neon Red to create the color below. She blotted the color to create a matte finish. At $7.49 each, you can achieve the same runway look without breaking the bank.

A great example of how versatile a lip color can be is shown below with models from designer Marissa Webb’s Soring 2014 runway show. All three models are wearing the same shade of Bobbi Brown’s Rich Lip Color in Blazing Red but the way it was blotted and applied showed that color in different shades. The first model had her color applied straight from the tube, the second model’s lip color was blotted with a tissue to create a matte look and the third model had hers applies as a barely-there stain applied with fingers, then smudged with a Q-tip.

The same can be done with a shade of orange so you can wear it boldly one day and then in a subtle way the next day.

If you decide to try an orange lip this spring season, just remember, orange is bold on its own so subtle makeup is key. Some mascara and light makeup is enough. If you are tanned/darker, keep it matte and there is no need to mix it too much from the original color. If you’re paler, softer coral tones work best and add a gloss to soften the look. Most of all, have fun! Orange is a color that is fun and a great way to mix it up and look different.
