Remember when we reported that an artist had given Barbie a “plus size” makeover a few months ago? That image went viral and sparked many conversations about body image and what people think “plus size” means.

Artist Bakalia wasn’t the only one thinking about revamping Barbie to a more realistic look.  Researcher and illustrator Nickolay Lamm has created his own toy doll that looks more like the average woman than Barbie does. Let us introduce you to Lammily

Lamm first introduced Lammily in the summer of 2013, a doll he created using measurements he determined by data from the CDC. He decided to create a doll that fit the measurements of an average 19-year-old American woman. His goal with Lammily was to show that average is beautiful.

Lamm says in a video he has up on his website to promote Lammily:

“Lammily promotes realistic beauty standards, because she is made according to typical human body proportions.”

He goes on to describe Lammily as fun, fit, strong and has style. She wears minimal makeup and wears more simpler clothing than what is used for dolls.

This week, Lamm launched a crowdfunding campaign to help him manufacture the doll. He’s been in talks with Robert Rambeau, former Vice President of Manufacturing at Mattel, who has offered assistance to Lamm in choosing a manufacturer. The money he raises will be used towards covering the costs of tooling and molding as well as meeting the manufacturer’s minimum order quantity.

People donating $25 will receive a first edition Lammily doll, which will not be sold in retail stores. Lamm’s goal is to raise $95,000. At the time of the writing of this article, he has not only accomplished that goal but doubled it. His total now is $204,821.
