Size diversity is not just reaching the runways and campaigns during this exciting time of body confidence. Now comic book companies are getting on board with Valiant Comics announcing it will launch a limited series comic featuring a plus size superheroine.
Valiant announced this week that the new series will debut in January 2016 starring character Faith “Zephyr” Herbert of the Harbinger Renegades, going on her first solo adventure.
In a time where many plus size women and women in general are shown “sexualized” in comics and in the media, the character Faith is a welcome breath of fresh air as an everyday plus size woman whose body is more realistic. You can look at her and identify with her size.
She’s got breasts that are not super exaggerated, a belly and wide hips. YES!
Valiant Editor-in-Chief Warren Simons said in an official statement:
“Faith is one of the most unique characters in comics – a sci-fi loving, Firefly-quoting fangirl that wound up standing shoulder-to-shoulder alongside some of the most powerful superheroes on Earth, who, at the end of the day, might just prove herself to be the bravest of them all.”
“Since she first stepped off the page in HARBINGER through HARBINGER WARS, UNITY, and ARMOR HUNTERS, fans far and wide have demanded that she be given her time to shine in the spotlight. Fortunately, Jody, Francis, and Marguerite are the perfect team to give Faith the leading role she deserves with a fast and fun-filled series that will establish her once and for all as one of Valiant’s leading lights.”

“Gifted with the power of flight and the ability to carry other objects in a ‘companion field,’ Faith is also notably a lighthearted fangirl, often known for name checking Joss Whedon and her comics collection during her adventures. Buoyant in both in personality and free-flying due to her abilities, Faith was given the codename ‘Zephyr’ and has a been a central fixture of the Valiant Universe in recent years.”
A plus size superheroine with the gift of flight? YES!
In this series, the teenager becomes that superheroine she always wanted to be, assuming a mild-manner secret identity as Faith and a day job as a reporter.
At night, she become the sky-soaring Zephyr, watching over the City of Angels. She encounters a major challenge that will have readers wondering if she is in over her head or can she overcome her biggest challenge yet?
Faith #1 will cost $3.99; it’s a limited series and it will be available in January 2016.
With Faith being the only plus size female superheroine out there in mainstream comics at the moment, this is exciting, amazing and so empowering. Kudos to Valiant Comics for this limited series!
