Hunter McGrady Sizzles in Chromat’s New Plus Size Swim Collection

Chromat continues to be one of the strongest voices in the fashion industry when it comes to size diversity and inclusion.

Designer Becca McCharen-Tran has never shied away from using a diverse set of models on the runway at New York Fashion Week, including plus size models Hunter McGrady and Denise Bidot, with most recently having iconic plus supermodel Emme on the runway.

So we were not surprised at the news that Chromat has added plus sizes to its swim line. McCharen-Tran has been working on this for a while, having announced a few months ago that Nordstrom made a major buy from her fall 2018 collection, including the first order for Chromat swimsuits in sizes up to 3X. So we knew the plus sizes were coming and we were overjoyed.

It’s designers such as McCharen-Tran and Christian Siriano who continue to push the envelope and go against the grain in the fashion industry, putting larger bodies on the runway and challenging the stereotypes that fashion stops at a certain size.

The plus sizes officially launched on Chromat’s site last week and we are still swooning over the campaign images featuring Hunter McGrady and Malik Stevenson.

McGrady has become the IT girl when it comes to plus size swimwear, having made history as being the largest model to ever appear in Sports Illustrated’s Swim Issue at a size 16 and she also recently launched her own swim line with U.K. swim and lingerie brand Playful Promises. So we think she was the perfect choice to be front and center in Chromat’s plus sizes campaign.

Overall, we’re happy to see Chromat now offering up to a 3X because this means a baby step in the direction of size inclusivity. Plus sizes don’t stop at a 3X but we’ll take this small win because perhaps it will set that example for other designers and brands to follow suit.

McCharen-Tran told Glamour recently:

“I think it’s the stigma around plus size that needs to be abolished, not the definition itself. I think people will always need to know what size range is available no matter what you call it. Hopefully, the stigma around larger bodies in the fashion industry at large is changing. That’s what really needs to be exploded and expanded upon.”

Amen!
