Tonight is the VS fashion show. Something i used to watch and constantly compare myself to. They brought out a statement a few weeks ago that they would NEVER include plus models in their shows. Saying that it’s “fantasy” and not reality. What they aren’t willing to say, is that they know how their shows and ads affect young women who are of different shapes and sizes, but they truly don’t care. I remember seeing the angels walk the runway, and hurting inside not understanding that no matter how much i over exercised, or how much i starved myself, and obsessed over my weight, my body would never, ever, look like that. I grew up as an athlete, I was always thick, especially when i was in the best shape of my life. I was constantly being bullied for my weight, my build, and the fact i always looked different than the typical girls at my school. I never felt worthy, i could never wear the trendy clothes, and was usually stuck shopping in the boys section. As i continued to get older, this issue/trend continued with brands like @victoriassecret. They emulated the systemic media bias, and the constant scrutiny and pressure women are under to look a certain way. As a young girl i would walk past the ads in the mall, watch the runway show every year, and ask why I couldn’t look like that? Why doesn’t anyone in any magazine I open, or fashion campaign I see, look like ME? From the time I was very young, I never felt beautiful, and I never felt like I fit in because of the media’s constant pressure for women to be perfectly shaped, thin, and have Eurocentric features. Representation MATTERS. Young women of all shapes, sizes, and races (and boys too) deserve to be seen and represented in the media. We are demanding mainstream brands do better, and raise the bar. So I say to you @victoriassecret, wyd sis? You know exactly what you’re doing. It’s time to get with it or get lost. 🤷🏽‍♀️🙏🏽
