Maddy: How long have you been in the plus-size industry and how did you get started?

Tazah: I have been in the modeling industry for 12 rewarding years. I got the modeling bug in high school where I participated in my first fashion show. Later after college, I was exposed to “Monique’s Fat Chance” and “BET’s Rip the Runway”. This was the first time I had ever seen women that looked like me represented in a positive light in mainstream media. From that very moment, I knew that I was going to be a model. I went straight to my “MySpace” and got to work. I found a casting in Philly for a show called “Stilettoes and Curves” with the “Full Figured Diva Academy” directed by Natasha Bryson. I haven’t looked back since.

What has been one of the most important lessons you have learned about the modeling industry?

The most important lesson that I have learned in this industry is that “No’s” keep you humble. There are so many talented and beautiful models in the industry… when you hear “Yes” too much it is easy to get complacent and arrogant. A “No” every now and again keeps you grounded and hungry. Always look for ways to improve and embrace criticism.

For aspiring models looking to elevate to the next level in 2020, what would be your advice?

The best advice that I can give to aspiring models is to take yourself seriously. Invest in yourself and do your research before you spend those dollars. You have to treat yourself as a brand and you have to manage your brand 24/7. There are no days off when you are chasing this dream.

Let’s talk about your RUNWAY skills… I watched you at The CurvyFest training the models and it was like watching someone who has been walking runways in Milan. What are some of the tricks of the trade when it comes to walking the runway?

First of all… WOW! Thank you! I got my start with the “Full Figured Diva Academy” where I received some amazing runway training with Natasha Bryson and Dana Brown. Before the print work, I was ALL about the runway. I was always very soft-spoken and super nice, runway gave me an outlet to explore my alter ego. When I am on the runway I turn into the woman that I secretly wish I was all the time. If you can remember the 3 P’s you should be able to slay any runway. 1) Practice, 2) Posture and 3) Pose.

What’s next for Tazah in 2020?

I guess I am making the official announcement right here that I have been signed to Part & Parcel Talent agency. I have been doing it freelance for so long that this is going to be a new experience for me but I am both excited and optimistic that this will be a great partnership. I look forward to working with brands that I have only dreamt of working with in the past and I plan to stay the course!
