Ready For Back To School?
We are still enjoying the summer heat, beach days, and bar-b-que with family and friends but before you know it our kids will be going back to school.
Being the mom of a teenage daughter on the Autism Spectrum has taught me a lot about how to prepare for the upcoming school year, especially while we continue to navigate uncertain times.

One of the things I enjoy with my daughter is being able to see her own individual style develop.
I no longer just buy what I think would look cute on her, I ask her, show her and find that it leads us to discussions about colors and how certain fabrics make her feel. Like me, Madison loves graphic shirts so when she saw this “KINDNESS” tee in her favorite color it was a MUST-have for her. Denim fabric can be a tough choice for her because she has sensory issues, so I allow her to touch various types of denim to see which one she will embrace. I have to say she has not met a Lane Bryant denim she did not like (although she’s partial to pull-ons).
Clearly, I’m ready for fall fashion and with the 70’s influence still being a prominent trend, I’m embracing it as much as I can. It was the colors and the stripes for me and also the rebel inside of me. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read about how plus-sized women should not wear stripes or a 1,000 other trends that miraculously look amazing on others but not us. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… wear what you love!

Creating Transitional Looks
I’m not going back to school but I love the “back to school” trend. Fashion and functionality for me always make sense and as the weather begins to get cooler in the mornings and late evening throwing a denim jacket over many of the looks you have is just a win-win.
Let me explain how this FAB look came together for me. I started with the skirt… I was drawn to the print actually. I paired it with a tank because it’s still hot, but at night it’s getting cooler so that’s where this ahhhmazing denim jacket came in. (Fit Tip: If you normally do not button your denim jacket check the size guide, as sometimes sizing down is possible and you won’t have so much fabric to deal with) And lastly these comfy white pull-on sneakers are a staple in my closet and just pulls this entire look together.

Spontaneous Moments
It’s tough for the family to go from beach and pool days to studying, getting up early and only having 2 days to decompress… so I apply what I like to call “spontaneous moments” to our life. Maybe it’s an afternoon movie, or dinner on a Tuesday night just to break the monotonous work and school week. I try and choose something that we can both enjoy and not take up too much time. Creating memories is always important and if we don’t stop to make them we will not have them to look back on.

Self-Care and Friendships
I could write an entire post about the many ways that I practice self-care. I enjoy joyful movement whether it be at home or at the gym, I take digital breaks and I take 20-minute naps… trust me they work! I also found that working on the friendships in my life are a form of self-care because those are the people that are there to carry you when you need a shoulder to lean on. So while we are also extremely busy trying to navigate life don’t forget to also work on the relationships in your life as a form of self-care. True friendships will carry you through the toughest of times and celebrate life’s special moments. So instead of staying home maybe put on that super cute dress and throw on some gloss and head out the door.
