The “Fat Tax” for Plus-Size Brides: How the Bridal Sphere is Behind the Times in Body Positivity

Published

on

The “Fat Tax” for Plus-Size Brides – Opinion Piece Written By Ranu Coleman, CMO of Azazie

If you’re not familiar with the “fat tax” then you’re one of the lucky ones who has never walked into a store and had to pay significantly more for the same item simply because it’s a few sizes bigger.

The fat tax is defined as “the difference in price between items– clothing, bikes, furniture etc.– made for those in the plus-sized community, usually priced higher than it would be for those who are not.” Considering that everyone is a different shape and size this is a ridiculous phenomenon, but a prevalent one nonetheless. Aside from the obvious financial inequalities that the “fat tax” perpetuates, increased prices also emphasizes the notion that women on the curvier side of the spectrum should pay more for the extra fabric used to fit their bodies–and it’s especially present in the wedding industry.

It’s no coincidence that “shedding for the wedding” is a common theme among brides–wanting to look perfect (at least by common beauty standards) is at the top of many women’s lists of priorities as they prepare for their big day. The first issue (of many) with the concept of losing weight before your wedding is that it reaffirms the notion that women have to be skinny to be deemed beautiful. Even worse, the intention of losing weight based on appearance isn’t sustainable and leaves women more likely to go to extreme measures to shed pounds that will be detrimental to their health in the long run, despite looking thinner for the moment.

We’re all for establishing healthier habits and even using your wedding as a push to make those changes, but shaming anyone (especially a bride–who is beautiful no matter what size) is never acceptable.

That’s why the recurring stories we hear about women having to pay extra for plus-size bridal gowns are infuriating. The bridal industry is notorious for pulling sizes for brides that are far beyond their normal “street size”, typically two sizes bigger. Bride Mary Jane O’Toole reflects on this exact issue sharing that her size 12 frame only fit into a size 18 and 20 dress, in which she recalls being charged a whopping $600 more. This isn’t just a plus size issue.

The combination of the fat tax for the extra fabric and inaccurate sizing reflects a massive need in the bridal industry for gowns that are designed regardless ofsize.

It seems that plus size brides are in a lose-lose situation when searching for the perfect bridal gown–either trying to drastically cut down on their weight while establishing unhealthy habits to achieve a desired look, or remaining body positive and deal with the potentially traumatic fittings at bridal boutiques where the dresses she tries on in front of her family and friends barely zip or worse are listed at a higher price point. With the average American woman somewhere between a size 16 and 18, the bridal industry and the associated rhetoric needs to catch up.

However, although the bridal industry is comparatively behind the times in terms of body positivity and acceptance, some brands are making moves towards bridal inclusivity.

Designer Christian Siriano’s 2018 bridal collection goes up to size 26, and one of the two models he chose to model his gowns is a size 16. For the Fall 2018 runway collections, four bridal designers/brands — Theia, Alexandra Grecco, David’s Bridal, and Rebecca Schoneveld — included at least one plus-size model on their runway or in a presentation, which admittedly seems colossally minuscule compared to a record 90 walking in 12 NYFW shows (up from just 26 from the season prior). But for the very traditional (read: resistant to change) bridal industry, this marks a significant shift in attitudes toward addressing size-diversity and body-positivity and thereby making wedding dress shopping a much more inclusive experience.

Yet, many high end couture designers, and even major bridal retailers, are still excluding plus-size women in their marketing.

It doesn’t take much investigating to notice that the majority of high end brands don’t use women above runway size to model their clothing. Not only is this a huge missed opportunity with $20 billion in the plus size fashion market, it’s also not representative of their consumers. History even shows that adding plus size options to your products, especially in high-end brands, increases revenue. It begs the question of why all brands haven’t made the push towards fashion for everybody

At Azazie, we take size inclusivity beyond the runway and provide designer quality gowns specifically created for all women. With the help of our team of designers, who have experience creating designs for couture brands like Vera Wang and Marchesa, Azazie team is making options for brides of all sizes and budgets where other brands had previously lacked. We also feature real brides and bridesmaids on our social channels and hire women of diverse bodytypes to showcase our gowns. Put simply–we want to celebrate what makes us unique.

This is also why we offer custom sizing for free – we know that not every woman fits perfectly into a box on a size chart, not to mention how inaccurate other bridal shops are in their sizing. As one of the first in the industry to offer sizes 0-30, any bride that visits the Azazie website will be able to find something that fits her vision of a perfect dress, and won’t have to settle for a gown just because it’s the only one in her size. We commend other brands that are doing the same and urge bridal brands on and off the runway to tap into the market of designing for women of all body shapes. Every bride is special, and that’s a key theme we want people to take away from our brand’s mission.

It is time that the bridal industry eliminated the fat tax.

A woman’s wedding day is the day she should feel most beautiful, and not having access to your dream dress because of your size simply isn’t right. We look forward to seeing fashion accessibility changes with continued coverage on what it really means to be a beautiful bride: confidence (and a killer dress!)

Plus Size Bridal Q&A with Designer Phyllis Brasch Librach

Published

on

Calling All Plus Size Brides!

Please get ready to take notes of what industry expert Phyllis Brasch Librach has to share about plus size bridal and finding the perfect look for your special day.

PMM sat down for a Q & A with Librach, designer of wedding, prom and evening dresses in sizes 14 to 40 under the Sydney’s Closet, Tease Prom and Michelle Bridal brands.

PMM: You have been in the plus size bridal business for a very long time. How has the business side changed with technology and social media taking center stage in the fashion industry?

In ancient times, before the Internet, brides relied on magazines for everything wedding-related. That has now changed, forever. She’s not diving into the recycling bin to retrieve magazines anymore.

Today’s bride lives in a digital world and her wedding is no exception.  Social media touches every aspect of her wedding –  even playing Cupid. Consider:

  • One in every four couples hook up through social media, a dating app or dating website.
  • Half of all family and friends learn about a couple’s engagement on social media.
  • Within 24 hours of getting engaged, half of all brides update their Facebook status from single to engaged.
  • 70% of brides create a unique wedding hashtag.
  • 90% of brides use Pinterest for inspiration (so much easier than tearing pages out of magazines!).
  • 75% rely on Instagram as a planning tool.
  • 80% of brides find vendors through social media (who has a Yellow Pages anymore?)

First comes love, then comes technology. Brides turn to technology to take the stress out of wedding planning. It’s easy, accessible and affordable. No wonder technology is exploding as a planning tool and way to communicate with family, friends and guests.

By now the couple’s website, blog and online registry are so predictable. But cutting-edge technology could be coming to a wedding near you soon:

  • Video save-the-date, email and password protected
  • 3-D printed dessert decorations
  • Drones for jaw-dropping photography and video
  • Mini cameras tucked into bouquets to give the bride a live view of her wedding
  • A driverless car to take the bride and groom away in tech style

PMM: Bridal fashion trends have changed a lot in the plus size industry. What are the hottest trends in plus size bridal fashion right now?

A Call to Arms

Brides are in love with sleeves in every style and length: puff, raglan, detachable, belle, cap, bishop and slit.  My personal fave of all times is a full -length sleeve in a soft illusion net with covered buttons at the wrist. It creates a clean, long line and lets the bride dare to bare a little skin.  (And sometimes I add lace appliques to match the dress!)

“I want to cover my arms”  is the single most request I hear as a designer. Not to worry!  If sleeves aren’t your fashion style, cover your arms with a bolero, jacket, shawl or cape.

Lady in Lace

Lace never goes out of style. Its popularity persists because no fabric has a more romantic look.

Pocket Change

Brides can’t get enough pockets. The design detail adds just a hint of playfulness and a perfect place to stash a handkerchief or something blue.

Clean Slate

Credit the royals for inspiring the trend for wedding dresses with clean, unadorned designs. Now brides worldwide want simple, unembellished silhouettes that stand out. The trend proves you don’t need lace or crystals to be beautiful on your wedding day. Best of all, you get a blank slate to personalize your style with accessories. (Think beaded belt!)

Float Down the Aisle

Dramatic statement skirts add drama to the bride’s walk down – and up – the aisle. No wonder they’re so popular! The tiered and layered skirts in organza, tulle and chiffon make a strong fashion statement and look so fabulous in photos.

PMM: Sydney’s Closet offers a wide variety of special occasion options including wedding gowns, prom, and special occasion. What tips can you offer for people hesitant to buy online?

Plan ahead.

Buying special occasion dresses online is not a shopping decision you want to rush. Give yourself at least six months, ideally a year, to shop online. You want to be able to click to your heart’s content until you find the dress of your dreams.

Measure up.

Unfortunately, there are no standard sizes when it comes to Wedding, Prom and Evening dresses. Sizes vary wildly among designers. Never assume you will wear the same size you do in everyday clothes made of stretchy knits. A formal dress fabric and construction is more structured with no stretch.

You MUST take your measurements. It’s not an option. Ideally, it’s done by a professional seamstress or tailor. If not, check this friendly “How to Measure” video

Create a contact on your phone named “Measurements”. Store your bust, waist, hips and desired dress length from the hollow of your neck to the hemline.

Ready to order? Compare your bust, waist and hip measurements with the size chart for your dress. Match as closely as possible, and always plan on alterations for the perfect fit.

Read carefully to see if the dress you want is in stock in your size and color preference. If it has to be ordered, make sure it arrives in time for alterations.

Before you hit the BUY button, check and double-check the return and exchange policy. You need to be comfortable with the website’s terms and policies.

Warning!  Not all websites selling special occasion dresses can be trusted. Thousands based in China sell shoddy fakes of the real designer gowns. Some take your money and never send a dress.  Click here to learn more so you avoid getting scammed.

PMM: What does the 2020 bride look like to you?

She’s modern and a little rebellious. Watch for her to be ready to break tradition when she selects her wedding dress. She still wants to look – and feel – romantic and feminine on her big day. But she also wants to share her personal style and fashion personality whether it’s Boho, Princess, Modern or Traditional.

For Spring 2020, I kept that bride in mind when I designed black as a strong accent color in the Michelle Bridal Collection. Baby blue and pale pink are sure to be other hot hues.

Thank you, Phyllis for sharing these amazing tips, knowledge and advice on shopping as a plus size bride!

The BEST in Bridal Makeup

Published

on

Happy June everyone! I can’t believe its Summer and we’re halfway through the year, can you?

This month at PLUS is all about Brides, and as a Freelance Makeup Artist, I know how stressful wedding planning can be.

Here are some of my best tips to avoid a makeup meltdown.

While most Brides will hire a Makeup Artist to do their hair and makeup, you should always provide reference pictures for the Makeup Artist to work off of, so both of you stay on the same page.  I suggest saving pictures of what inspires you, both in hair and makeup, and sharing that color scheme and style with your Bridesmaids and Artist ahead of time.

Choosing the right Artist can be difficult, so I highly suggest scheduling a “run through” with any MUA you are considering hiring. Since every artist has different skill sets, products and time management, you’ll want to make sure all details are ironed out long before the big day. You will want to look perfect, so make sure your artist listens and that the makeup lasts all day.

Knowing it can be hard to narrow things down, I’ve come up with some great makeup that’s perfect for the Ultimate Summer Bride. These suggestions would also work great for Engagement Photos, Bachelorette Parties and Wedding Rehearsals if you’re feeling courageous enough to do your own makeup.   Have fun and feel beautiful! Xoxo Marianne

Waterproof Necessities

Regardless of skin type, certain items should be tear proof and long-lasting. You will get emotional, that’s guaranteed, so make sure your mascara and eyeliner will not run down your face and make sure your lipstick is transfer-proof for your big kiss.

Mascara

Col-Lab Makeup The Works Wow Effect All-In-One Mascara in Waterproof  $12.99

This mascara is great because its super black and blends your natural lashes well with false lashes because it’s so dark just like falsies.

Eyeliner

STILA Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner  $22

Stila has a great color range of waterproof liquid eyeliner if you’re feeling creative and daring, but the black and brown are great, too, for a classic look.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Cargo Swimmables Eyeliner  $18

Not all waterproof pencils are created equal, but these swimmables are wonderful and won’t run down your cheeks and ruin your makeup or pictures.

Brows

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz $21

The ultra-fine tip mimics hair like strokes in sparse areas of the eyebrow, while the spoolie end blends for a natural-looking finish.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Thrive Causemetics Instant Brow Fix Semi-Permanent Eyebrow Gel  $24

Big brows are totally in season and the best way to achieve them is to use a colored gel that will tint, lift and set your natural hairs which this semi-permanent gel does well.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Lipsticks and Lipliner

Dose of Colors and Stila are still my favoriteliquid lipstick formulas on the market because they’re kiss proof and non-drying. It’s important that lips still look like lips and not chapped, dried out raisins.  Feel free to add a gloss after the ceremony if you want to add some shine for photos during the reception.

Dose of Colors Liquid Matte Lipstick $18

It applies as a creamy liquid but after a few minutes it dries to an ultra-comfortable matte finish. Favorite bridal shades: A Mauve Story, Bare with Me,  and  Lets Cuddle.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Stila Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick $22

The texture is weightless on lips and  the color-rich formula will not bleed or transfer. Favorite bridal shades: Perla, Baci, Lido and Sienna.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Dose of Colors Lip Pencils  $14

The most comfortable lip liners for the price.  Creamy, long wearing lip liners deliver transfer resistant high coverage color with a matte finish.

Romantic Bride Vs Modern Bride

“Romantic” makeup tends to learn towards soft or bronzed warm tones while “Modern” makeup leans more towards vivid colors and/or cool tones.  If both appeal to you, do not worry! Test out what looks the best with your eye color and complexion, as there are no rules in makeup.  [divider] . [/divider]

Eyeshadow

Huda Beauty New Nude Palette  $65

The New Nude Palette is a gorgeous cool toned mauve palette that’s still so romantic due to the pops of ultra-metallics. The best of both worlds, this palette is perfect for all brides all year long.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Palette $42

The Norvina Palette with 14 whimsical shades ranging from bold and bright mattes to soft pastel metallics, is perfect for the more daring and modern Bride.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Nomad Cosmetics Marrakesh Medina Palette $37

The Marrakesh Medina Eyeshadow Palette contains intensely vibrant blues and warm nudes and ambers that will create beautiful and romantic bronzed eye looks for every complexion.

[divider] . [/divider]

Lashes

If you are an artificial lash novice, make sure to start wearing lashes before the wedding so you can get used to the added weight, which will eventually go away. I really encourage false lashes because even the most waterproof mascara can clump and flake off, and fake lashes still look good if you tear up.

ARDELL  Lash Wispies Black  $4.99

Ardell’s Lash Wispies Black look so natural your friends will think you were born with them. These lashes were made of 100% sterilized human hair.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Nanacoco 3D Volume Lashes in Paisley $6.99

These lashes are more dramatic than the wispies but still comfortable and affordable. The 3D Multi-layered lashes will lift and define your eyes like a Disnet princess.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Fragrance

Make sure to spray perfume on your skin and not on your dress as perfume can stain fabrics. For a subtle touch, you can have your hair stylist spray a hair brush with your perfume and then run that through your hair before they start styling. Here are some great Summer perfumes to consider.

Badgley Mischka Eau de Parfum  $115

Pear blossom, Pink Pepper emerges with a fresh aroma of Neroli and Iris. At the heart of the fragrance, are Magnolia, Jasmine Absolute, Tuberose, Peony, Jasmine Sambac and Osmanthus.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Elie Tahari Eau de Parfum $68

The fragrance opens with a vibrant bergamot, paired with dewy violet leaves and juicy pear. At the heart, green figs are entwined with the brightness of giant magnolia and the delicacy of tea blossom.

[SHOP]

[divider] . [/divider]

Cream Vs Powder

Skin type and texture are so important when picking the right base products. I typically use cream products on my brides with dry skin as the cream base doesn’t dry out skin. I like powder products for oily skin as cream products could break down or lift foundations products on skin that’s already oily. If makeup tends to slip and slide off your face use a cream cheek color prior to setting the make-up; once make-up is set apply a powder cheek color, this also works for bronzer, contour and highlight.

Primer

Winky Lux Whipped Cream Face Primer  $20

A hydrating primer that goes above and beyond, moisturizing your skin as it smooths the surface and reduces the appearance of pores.

[SHOP]
