Happy June everyone! I can’t believe its Summer and we’re halfway through the year, can you?
This month at PLUS is all about Brides, and as a Freelance Makeup Artist, I know how stressful wedding planning can be.
Here are some of my best tips to avoid a makeup meltdown.
While most Brides will hire a Makeup Artist to do their hair and makeup, you should always provide reference pictures for the Makeup Artist to work off of, so both of you stay on the same page. I suggest saving pictures of what inspires you, both in hair and makeup, and sharing that color scheme and style with your Bridesmaids and Artist ahead of time.
Choosing the right Artist can be difficult, so I highly suggest scheduling a “run through” with any MUA you are considering hiring. Since every artist has different skill sets, products and time management, you’ll want to make sure all details are ironed out long before the big day. You will want to look perfect, so make sure your artist listens and that the makeup lasts all day.
Knowing it can be hard to narrow things down, I’ve come up with some great makeup that’s perfect for the Ultimate Summer Bride. These suggestions would also work great for Engagement Photos, Bachelorette Parties and Wedding Rehearsals if you’re feeling courageous enough to do your own makeup. Have fun and feel beautiful! – Waterproof Necessities
Regardless of skin type, certain items should be tear proof and long-lasting. You will get emotional, that’s guaranteed, so make sure your mascara and eyeliner will not run down your face and make sure your lipstick is transfer-proof for your big kiss.
Col-Lab Makeup The Works Wow Effect All-In-One Mascara in Waterproof $12.99
This mascara is great because its super black and blends your natural lashes well with false lashes because it’s so dark just like falsies.
Dose of Colors and Stila are still my favoriteliquid lipstick formulas on the market because they’re kiss proof and non-drying. It’s important that lips still look like lips and not chapped, dried out raisins. Feel free to add a gloss after the ceremony if you want to add some shine for photos during the reception.
Dose of Colors Liquid Matte Lipstick $18
It applies as a creamy liquid but after a few minutes it dries to an ultra-comfortable matte finish. Favorite bridal shades: A Mauve Story, Bare with Me, and Lets Cuddle.
“Romantic” makeup tends to learn towards soft or bronzed warm tones while “Modern” makeup leans more towards vivid colors and/or cool tones. If both appeal to you, do not worry! Test out what looks the best with your eye color and complexion, as there are no rules in makeup.

Huda Beauty New Nude Palette $65
The New Nude Palette is a gorgeous cool toned mauve palette that’s still so romantic due to the pops of ultra-metallics. The best of both worlds, this palette is perfect for all brides all year long.
If you are an artificial lash novice, make sure to start wearing lashes before the wedding so you can get used to the added weight, which will eventually go away. I really encourage false lashes because even the most waterproof mascara can clump and flake off, and fake lashes still look good if you tear up.
ARDELL Lash Wispies Black $4.99
Ardell’s Lash Wispies Black look so natural your friends will think you were born with them. These lashes were made of 100% sterilized human hair.
Make sure to spray perfume on your skin and not on your dress as perfume can stain fabrics. For a subtle touch, you can have your hair stylist spray a hair brush with your perfume and then run that through your hair before they start styling. Here are some great Summer perfumes to consider.
Badgley Mischka Eau de Parfum$115
Pear blossom, Pink Pepper emerges with a fresh aroma of Neroli and Iris. At the heart of the fragrance, are Magnolia, Jasmine Absolute, Tuberose, Peony, Jasmine Sambac and Osmanthus.
Skin type and texture are so important when picking the right base products. I typically use cream products on my brides with dry skin as the cream base doesn’t dry out skin. I like powder products for oily skin as cream products could break down or lift foundations products on skin that’s already oily. If makeup tends to slip and slide off your face use a cream cheek color prior to setting the make-up; once make-up is set apply a powder cheek color, this also works for bronzer, contour and highlight.
Winky Lux Whipped Cream Face Primer $20
A hydrating primer that goes above and beyond, moisturizing your skin as it smooths the surface and reduces the appearance of pores.
With a texture unlike any other, this silky primer extends the wear of makeup while also concealing redness and minimizing the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles for a perfect complexion that lasts.
Lock-It Foundation gives you a gorgeous, supremely full-coverage, transfer-resistant, face that stays flawless all day without touching up. You can trust it to stay on your face and not end up on clothes when you hug everyone on your big day. Great for oily skin!
Kevyn Aucoin Etherealist Skin Illuminating Foundation $58
A unique blend of ingredients supports natural hydration and maintains skin’s moisture with a cushiony feel. It features light-diffusing particles and high-definition pigments that work together to perfect skin’s appearance. Great for mature and dry skin!
This multitasking color-correcting cream blurs and diffuses skin imperfections with buildable sheer to full coverage and Broad Spectrum SPF 35 protection. Perfect for outdoor events, it helps control oil to reduce shine.
Long-wearing yet creamy and moisturizing, this innovative formulation provides blendable and buildable color which perfect for day and night. Small and compact, you can pop it in any pocket for easy touchups on the go.
Kat Von D Kitten Mini Shade + Light Contour Duo $23
The contour shades create realistic shadows to recede facial features, while the highlight shades impart a soft luminosity to amplify dimension, so you can effortlessly sculpt, chisel, shape, and slenderize your features.
Setting makeup with setting powder is key to longevity, but finishing the final makeup with finishing powder and setting spray will keep your skin looking like skin. Finishing power is buffed into the skin at the end, pre-setting spray, to buff everything together. Here are some great options for all skin types and textures.
Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder $39
This lightweight, finely-milled powder doesn’t add weight or texture to skin and sets makeup for 12 hours. A cult favorite of makeup artists, the deeper shade is perfect of women of color.
A gorgeous finishing powder, in six universal shades, captures, diffuses and softens surrounding light with groundbreaking Photoluminescent Technology. Can be used to set foundation and adds light, without glitter, to your skin.
All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray keeps makeup looking gorgeously just-applied for up to 16 hours—without melting, fading or settling into fine lines. Seriously, it won’t move and it helps control shine.
Catrice Prime And Fine Dewy Glow Finish Spray $7.99
The Catrice Dewy Glow Spray is seriously lightweight and provides a fresh, dewy glow that melts makeup together (in a good way) and sets quickly. I prefer this dewy spray to others because it still sets your makeup so it doesn’t move.
