27th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day

Screenshot_2013-02-05-22-51-06-1(1)Today we celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. This initiative was created in 1987 and

has grown into a national health, wellness, and empowerment movement. NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states via community based events, awards ceremonies, and activities which inspire our youth and women to engage in sports and physical activity. On this day lets take the time to acknowledge the past, to reflect on current sports achievements which build on the positive aspects of sports, and continue to endeavor for equality and access to sports for all women.

We say thank you Savannah Sanitoa for your heart, intestinal fortitude, motivation, and great spirit regarding your performance at the 2009 World Athletics Championship in Berlin.  A shotputter representing American Samoa at theTrack & Field World Championship; she chose to fulfill her heart and made a gutsy move running the 100m dash as her wildcard option in the competition. When interviewed by reporters regarding her performance, she is quoted as saying

“It’s a personal best just for me to be here at the World’s. We have little competition back at home, but to be here amongst the best in the world is pretty exciting”.

Although she did not receive a gold medal for her event, she won gold in the hearts of many.  To read more about her story, follow the link below.
